Manual starters are simple devices operated by a button or rotary knob, using mechanical linkages to control motor operation. Note that these starters don't break control circuits during power loss, which may cause automatic restart when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component directs power from the battery to the starter motor, which engages the starter drive (Bendix gear) with the vehicle's flywheel. The motor turns the engine to initiate combustion. Once the engine is running, the starter disengages automatically.
