The BS 476-6 Fire Propagation Index Tester is a specialized testing instrument designed to evaluate the flame spread characteristics of building materials according to British Standard BS 476-6. This equipment determines the fire resistance performance of wall cladding and ceiling materials through precise flame propagation testing.
Testing Methodology
The test exposes specimens to a combination of radiant heat source and open flame. The radiant panel delivers a heat flux density of 30 kW/m². At 3 minutes into testing, the auxiliary gas flame intensity is adjusted to 1000 BTU/min, then reduced to 800 BTU/min at 8 minutes, maintaining stable output until test completion. The 15-minute test quantifies flame front expansion rate to evaluate material fire resistance.
