Calcium silicon, also known as calcium silicide, is an alloy composed of calcium, silicon, and traces of other elements. It is primarily used as a deoxidizer, desulfurizer, and alloying agent in the steelmaking industry.
In cast iron production, calcium silicon is more effective than ferrosilicon for improving cast iron properties. This alloy serves as both an effective inoculant for spheroidal graphite formation and provides deoxidation, desulfurization, denitrification, and silicon enhancement benefits.
Calcium and silicon exhibit strong affinity with oxygen, particularly calcium which also bonds strongly with sulfur and nitrogen. This makes calcium silicon an ideal composite deoxidizer and desulfurizer. The alloy's strong deoxidizing capability helps remove impurities while improving steel's plasticity, impact toughness, fluidity, and ductility. Calcium silicon can effectively replace aluminum for final deoxidation.
