Black silicon carbide is produced at high temperature in an electric resistance type furnace with quartz sand and petroleum coke as its main raw materials. Its hardness is between fused alumina and synthetic diamond. Mechanical intensity is higher than fused alumina. It is brittle and sharp with some degree of electrical and heat conductivity.

Silicon Carbide has a Mohs hardness grade of 9.5, second only to diamond (Grade 10). It features excellent thermal conductivity, semiconductor properties, and high-temperature oxidation resistance. Due to its chemical stability, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, and abrasion resistance, silicon carbide is primarily used in four main areas:
