The automotive gasoline pump is a core component of the fuel system, primarily responsible for transferring gasoline from the fuel tank to the engine and providing stable pressure to meet the engine's operational requirements.
The core of an electric gasoline pump is a direct current motor and a fuel-pumping element. When powered, the motor drives the fuel-pumping element (such as an impeller, roller, or gear) to rotate, creating a vacuum suction at the inlet to draw in fuel and generating pressure at the outlet to pump out the fuel.
If a fuel pump malfunction is suspected, the following simple preliminary checks can be attempted:
- Listen for sounds: When turning on the ignition switch (without starting the engine), carefully listen for a brief 'humming' sound near the fuel tank. A normally functioning fuel pump produces a slight operating noise; if there is complete silence or abnormal noise, the fuel pump may not be working.
- Measure pressure: Using a fuel pressure gauge to measure the fuel line pressure is the most direct method to determine the fuel pump's condition. Typically, the maximum fuel supply pressure of a gasoline pump can reach approximately 400-650 kPa, and the holding pressure should also be within a certain range. If the pressure is too low, it usually indicates that the fuel pump needs to be replaced.
