The coolant bleed hose, also known as the engine coolant vent hose, is a vital component of the automotive cooling system.
Function: Primarily serves to release air trapped within the cooling system. When coolant is added or replaced, air may enter the system. If not promptly expelled, this air can form air locks, obstructing normal coolant circulation and leading to engine overheating. The coolant bleed hose facilitates the removal of this air, ensuring the cooling system operates correctly and maintaining the engine within its optimal temperature range.
Regular maintenance procedure:
1. Clean the hose surface:
- Wipe the hose surface with a damp cloth to remove dust, grease, and coolant residue, preventing contaminants from corroding the outer layer.
- For heavily greased surfaces, apply a small amount of neutral detergent before wiping. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to air-dry.
2. Check clamp tightness:
- Using a spanner, gently tighten the clamp at the hose connection to ensure no looseness. Exercise caution to avoid over-tightening, which may deform or damage the hose connection.
3. Assisting Cooling System Bleeding:
- Following coolant replacement or cooling system repairs, complete system bleeding via the bleed hose.
- Start the engine and activate the heater to circulate coolant. Monitor the expansion tank fluid level; once stable with no bubbles emerging, bleeding is complete. This prevents abnormal pressure in the hose caused by air locks.
