The carbon canister solenoid valve, also known as the carbon canister purge valve or EVAP solenoid valve, is a critical component within a vehicle's evaporative emissions control system (EVAP system). Typically an electrically operated solenoid valve driven by the engine control unit (ECU), it regulates the flow of fuel vapour from the activated carbon canister into the engine's intake manifold. Its primary function is to open the solenoid valve at appropriate intervals during engine operation, directing fuel vapour adsorbed by the canister's activated carbon into the intake manifold for combustion. This prevents direct atmospheric release of fuel vapour, thereby reducing pollutant emissions and enhancing fuel economy. The operating principle of the charcoal canister solenoid valve is based on the opening and closing of an electromagnetically controlled valve. This generates a magnetic field that attracts the valve spool, opening the valve. At this point, fresh air drawn into the charcoal canister by the vacuum from the intake manifold carries the fuel vapour adsorbed by the activated carbon into the engine combustion chamber for combustion. When vapour introduction is unnecessary (e.g. engine shutdown, excessively low idle speed, or emission control system diagnostics), the ECU interrupts power to the solenoid valve. The coil de-energises, allowing spring force to reset the valve core and close the passage, halting fuel vapour flow. This precisely controlled opening and closing cycle, regulated by the ECU, achieves efficient recovery and utilisation of fuel vapour.
