   Hippophae rhamnoides is a deciduous shrub or tree belonging to the Elaeagnaceae family and the *Hippophae* genus. It can reach a height of 5 meters, and up to 18 meters in high mountain valleys. It has numerous, stout thorns. Young branches are brownish-green, densely covered with silvery-white to brownish scales, sometimes with white stellate hairs. Leaves are usually nearly opposite, attached to the branches, papery, narrowly lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, with obtuse ends or a nearly rounded base. The upper surface is green, the lower surface is silvery-white or pale white, covered with scales, and lacks stellate hairs. The petioles are very short. The fruit is spherical, orange-yellow or orange-red; the seeds are small, broadly elliptic to ovate, sometimes slightly flattened, black or purplish-black, and glossy. It flowers from April to May and fruits from September to October.

   Hippophae rhamnoides is distributed in Lithuania, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, the Netherlands, and other countries. In China, it is distributed in Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, and western Sichuan. It commonly grows in sunny mountain ridges, valleys, dry riverbeds, or hillsides in temperate regions at altitudes of 800-3600 meters, in gravelly, sandy, or loess soils. It is extremely common in the Loess Plateau of China.
