Yaskawa GA50U4009ABA GA500 VFD 480V 3-Phase 5HP 8.9A IP20
Product Overview
The Yaskawa GA50U4009ABA is a GA500 industrial variable frequency drive for 380 to 480 VAC three-phase motor systems. It provides a 5 HP or 3.7 kW Normal Duty rating with 8.9 A output current. Under Heavy Duty selection, the applicable rating is 4 HP or 3 kW with 7.3 A output current.
This model is suitable when the current capacity of GA50U4007ABA is insufficient but the higher GA50U4012ABA rating is unnecessary. Its dual-duty rating allows it to serve variable-torque equipment at the 5 HP level or higher-overload machinery at the 4 HP level, provided the connected motor current remains within the applicable limit.
Model-Specific Rating and Selection
For Normal Duty operation, GA50U4009ABA supports up to 8.9 A rated output. This rating is typically relevant to pumps, fans and machinery with moderate overload demand. For Heavy Duty operation, the 7.3 A limit should be used when evaluating conveyors, mixers, loaded starts or repeated acceleration cycles.
Nominal power is not sufficient for final selection. Two motors with the same horsepower may have different full-load current, efficiency, base frequency and starting characteristics. The drive should provide adequate continuous-current capacity and acceleration margin without relying on an oversized power description.
Motor Control Technology
The GA500 series supports V/f control and open-loop vector control for induction motors together with compatible permanent-magnet motor control. Open-loop vector operation can provide improved low-speed torque and speed regulation without a motor-mounted encoder when motor data and tuning are correctly configured.
Commissioning parameters should be derived from the actual motor nameplate. Motor current, voltage, base frequency, rated speed and control method must be verified. Autotuning requirements differ according to the motor and operating mode, so the machine should be placed in a safe condition before any rotational procedure.
Control, Safety and Communication
The drive provides programmable digital and analog control functions for operating commands, speed reference, interlocks and status feedback. Embedded RS-485 communication supports MEMOBUS/Modbus RTU. Additional protocols such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS-DP, EtherCAT and MECHATROLINK require compatible optional equipment and correct network configuration.
GA500 Safe Torque Off is rated SIL3 according to IEC 62061 and PLe according to ISO 13849-1 when used within an appropriately designed and validated safety system. STO prevents the power stage from generating motor torque but does not electrically isolate the drive or motor terminals.

Application Engineering
Typical applications include production conveyors, centrifugal pumps, industrial fans, packaging lines, mixers, material-handling equipment and general automation machinery. Application review should include load inertia, breakaway torque, minimum operating speed, acceleration time, reversing frequency and stopping requirements.
The built-in braking transistor enables connection of a compatible external braking resistor. The resistor remains a separate component and must be selected for the calculated regenerative energy and duty cycle. Frequent stopping may require greater thermal capacity than an occasional emergency deceleration.
Installation and Commissioning Notes
Install the IP20 drive in a suitable cabinet with adequate cooling and protection from conductive contamination. Verify mounting clearances and applicable derating for temperature, altitude, carrier frequency or installation arrangement. Separate power wiring from low-level analog and communication cables and apply appropriate grounding and shielding practices.
Before production operation, test motor direction, frequency limits, acceleration and deceleration, fault response, safety inputs and controller commands. Confirm that the driven machine remains within its permitted mechanical speed range.
Replacement Checklist
- Match the complete GA50U4009ABA model and specification number.
- Confirm 380–480 VAC three-phase supply compatibility.
- Select the correct 8.9 A ND or 7.3 A HD current limit.
- Record motor data, parameters and terminal assignments.
- Verify STO wiring and communication hardware.
- Confirm braking resistor resistance and thermal duty.
- Review motor rotation, speed limits and machine interlocks.
Related GA500 Models
GA50U4007ABA provides 7.1 A Normal Duty and 5.6 A Heavy Duty output. GA50U4012ABA increases capacity to 11.9 A Normal Duty and 9.2 A Heavy Duty. The adjacent model should be selected when motor current or load demand falls outside the GA50U4009ABA range.
