Product Description
Mixed Fuel DME Dimethyl Liquid Solvent Methylating Agent for Pharmaceutical
Product Overview
Dimethyl (DME) is a flammable gas that forms explosive mixtures with air. It poses significant fire and explosion risks when exposed to heat, sparks, flames, or oxidants. With density greater than air, it can spread considerable distances at lower levels and may ignite upon contact with fire sources.
Safety Notice: DME can generate explosive peroxides when exposed to air or light. High heat may increase container pressure, risking rupture and explosion.
Key Applications
- Primary use as methylating agent for dimethyl sulfate production
- Synthesis of N,N-dimethylaniline, methyl acetate, acetic anhydride, and ethylene derivatives
- Versatile applications as alkylating agent, refrigerant, foaming agent, and solvent
- Used in pharmaceutical, dye, and pesticide industries
- Aerosol propellant for personal care products and coatings
- Alternative fuel additive and Freon substitute
Chemical Properties
Colorless, easily liquefied gas producing bright flame when burned. Soluble in water, gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, chlorobenzene, and methyl acetate.
Production Methods
By-Product Method
Primarily obtained as by-product in synthetic methanol production. Modern low-pressure methanol technology yields minimal DME content in crude methanol.
Catalytic Dehydration Methods
Small-scale production utilizes methanol catalytic dehydration:
- Liquid Phase: Heating methanol-sulfuric acid mixture
- Gas Phase: Methanol vapor passed over alumina or ZSM-5 molecular sieve catalysts
Synthesis Methods
One-Step Synthesis
Direct conversion of syngas to DME in single reactor:
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Reaction Principle | Simultaneous methanol synthesis and dehydration |
| Catalyst | Bifunctional Cu-Zn-Al(O) + alumina/SiO₂-Al₂O₃/zeolite |
| Temperature | 280-340°C |
| Pressure | 0.5-4.2 MPa |
| Selectivity | >98% DME |
Process Advantages: Short flow, reduced equipment investment, high product quality
Representative Processes: Topsøe (Denmark), Air Products LPDME™ (USA), NKK (Japan)
Representative Processes: Topsøe (Denmark), Air Products LPDME™ (USA), NKK (Japan)
Two-Step Synthesis
Sequential methanol synthesis followed by dehydration:
| Stage | Process Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Methanol Synthesis | Standard syngas conversion using Cu-based catalysts |
| Dehydration | Gas-phase (zeolite catalysts) or liquid-phase (sulfuric acid) methods |
Note: Sulfuric acid method is being phased out due to environmental concerns.
