Stainless Steel Material Selection Guide (Abridged Version)
Core Selection Principles
Core Characteristics of the Four Main Series
| Series | Core Grades | Core Advantages | Disadvantages | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Austenitic | 304/316L, 310S | Excellent corrosion/heat resistance, good formability/weldability | Prone to work hardening, medium strength | Mid→High |
| Ferritic | 430, 443 | Cost-effective, good machinability | Poor weldability, average corrosion resistance | Low→Mid |
| Martensitic | 410, 420, 440C | High hardness (quenchable), excellent machinability | Poor corrosion/weldability | Low→Mid |
| Duplex | 2205, 2507 | Excellent corrosion resistance + high strength, pitting resistance | Poor machinability, high cost | High |
Precision Material Selection by Scenario (First Choice + Core Reason)
- General Civil Use (Kitchenware/Sanitary/Hardware) : 304 | Resists daily corrosion, good formability, high cost performance; 430 for cost-effective option
- Food/Pharmaceutical/Drinking Water : 304/316L | Food-grade, resists food acid-alkali corrosion, no precipitation after welding; 304L for welded parts
- Marine/High-Chloride (Seawater/Pool/Coastal) : 316L | Resists chloride pitting, main industrial grade for chloride environments; 2205 for high-load scenarios
- High Temperature (>600℃) : 310S (≤1200℃)/309S (≤900℃) | Resists high-temperature oxidation, no softening; 430 (≤600℃) for cost-effective option
- Low Temperature (<-20℃) : 316L/304L | Resists low-temperature brittle fracture, retains plasticity; low-carbon grades mandatory for ultra-low temperature (≥-196℃)
- Machining/Wear-Resistant (Cutting Tools/Molds/Shafts) : 440C | High quenchable hardness; 410/420 for basic wear resistance
- High Strength + Corrosion Resistance (High-Pressure Pipes/Heavy-Duty Equipment) : 2205 | Twice the strength of 304, corrosion/ deformation resistance; 2507 for severe corrosion
- Decorative Scenarios : 304/430 for indoor | Easy to polish, good appearance; 316 for outdoor/coastal | Resists high-chloride atmospheric corrosion, non-discoloring
- General Industry (Weak Acid/Alkali/Chemical) : 304L/304 | Good corrosion resistance & weldability, industrial general grade; 316 for trace chloride environments
Key Points to Avoid Selection Mistakes
- Prioritize low-carbon grades with L for welded parts to prevent intergranular corrosion;
- Magnetism is not a criterion for authenticity: Austenitic steel is slightly magnetic after cold working, ferritic/martensitic steel is strongly magnetic;
- Smoother surface = better corrosion resistance: Polished/Brushed > Pickled > Hot-rolled; smooth surface preferred for high-chloride scenarios;
- Cost control: Use 304 instead of 316, 430 instead of 304 for non-extreme scenarios; select grades on demand, no blind over-specification;
- Food/pharmaceutical industry grades must comply with food contact standards such as GB 4806.9/FDA.
