L5508D1AP Schneider Clipsal C-Bus Multi Phase Dimmer Eight Way 1 Amp Leading Edge Control Unit Rail Mounted
The L5508D1AP is an eight channel leading edge dimmer from the Clipsal C-Bus range with a rating of one ampere per channel. Its low channel rating is the point of the product rather than a limitation: eight circuits of one ampere are used where the lighting is arranged in many small, individually controlled groups, such as a display wall, a shelf lighting scheme or a facade of individually addressed fittings, and where the total load on any single circuit is small but the number of circuits is large.
The dimmer is supplied without its own power supply, so the C-Bus network has to be powered elsewhere in the installation, which is normal practice in a cabinet where a network supply unit serves several devices. Leading edge phase control is appropriate for conventional filament lamps and for drivers that explicitly accept it, and it remains the most tolerant method for the high inrush current of a cold lamp. Because the rating per channel is modest, the unit rewards a careful load schedule rather than a generous one.

An eight channel one ampere module is chosen because the group count matters more than the group size, and that choice has a commissioning consequence: the load schedule becomes essential documentation rather than a formality, because a channel that is accidentally loaded beyond one ampere will fail in a way that is initially attributed to the lamp.
The absence of a network power supply in the module means the C-Bus network burden of the whole cabinet has to be calculated before the units are ordered, since each device adds to the load on the network supply and the total must stay within the rating of that supply.
Where the channels drive small LED fittings rather than filament lamps, the driver must be confirmed as accepting leading edge control, and the minimum load per channel should be checked as well as the maximum, because a channel loaded far below its minimum will behave erratically rather than simply dimming poorly. Retaining the as-built channel list is advisable, since the density of groups makes an undocumented installation slow to service.
Retail display lighting is the clearest application, where a wall or a shelf run has many individually controlled groups and the load on each is small. Galleries and museums use it where exhibits are lit in narrow groups and the level is set per object or per case.
Hotel facade and landscaping lighting applies it where the fittings are arranged in many small zones, and restaurants use it where the table lighting is grouped for scene control. Reception areas and feature walls specify it where the lighting design depends on many small circuits rather than a few large ones.
Because the module is a legacy C-Bus product, it is also the correct replacement for installations that already contain one, and those sites benefit from keeping a spare of the same type rather than mixing in a different channel rating.
