Application Guidelines for V-CHIP Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

A) Circuit Design
  • Ensure operating and mounting conditions are within specified limits.
  • Operating temperature and applied ripple current must be within specifications.
  • Select capacitors that meet life requirements for the circuit design.
  • Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized; avoid reverse or AC voltage. Use bi-polar capacitors for circuits with potential reverse voltage, but not for pure AC circuits.
  • Avoid using aluminum electrolytic capacitors in circuits requiring rapid and frequent charge/discharge cycles; use special design capacitors with extended life characteristics.
  • Do not apply overload voltage. Peak voltage (DC + ripple) should not exceed rated voltage.
  • For series connections of 2+ capacitors, ensure applied voltage is below rated value and use a balancing resistor for equal voltage distribution.
  • Avoid the following environmental conditions: exposure to water, brine, oil, toxic gases (hydrogen sulfide, sulfurous acid, nitrous acid, chlorine, bromine, methyl bromide, ammonia), ozone, UV radiation, severe vibration, or mechanical shock.
  • Electrolyte and paper are combustible; avoid circuit patterns beneath the capacitor end seal to prevent corrosion or short circuits.
  • Position heat-generating components away from capacitors or on the reverse side of the PC board, not directly under the capacitor.
  • Consider that electrical characteristics may vary with temperature and frequency.
  • When installing 2+ capacitors in parallel, consider current balance.
  • On double-sided PC boards, position capacitors away from unnecessary holes.
B) Mounting
  • Do not reuse capacitors after assembly and power application.
  • Capacitors stored for over 2 years may have increased leakage current; perform voltage treatment with a 1k resistor if necessary.
  • Confirm specifications and polarity before installation.
  • Do not drop capacitors or use dropped capacitors.
  • Avoid deforming the capacitor during installation.
  • Be mindful of mechanical shock from insertion machines, testers, or centering mechanisms.
  • Follow reflow soldering conditions specified in the catalog.
  • When using infrared heating, adjust heating intensity as absorption varies with capacitor color and size.
  • Do not tilt, lay down, or twist the capacitor body after soldering.
  • Do not carry the PC board by grasping the soldered capacitor.
  • Ensure nothing touches the capacitor after soldering. If PC boards are stacked, keep other components away from the capacitor.
  • Capacitors should not be affected by radiated heat from soldered components.
  • Cleaning:
    • Do not use halogenated cleaning agents. Contact sales for alternatives.
    • Recommended method: Total cleaning time within 2 minutes (immersion, ultrasonic, etc.). Cleaning agent temperature 40C. Dry with hot air for at least 10 minutes. Hot air temperature should be below capacitor's maximum operating temperature. Insufficient drying may cause appearance issues.
    • Avoid ozone-destructive cleaning agents.
C) In the Equipment
  • Do not touch terminals directly with hands.
  • Do not connect terminals with a conductor or spill conductive liquids near the capacitor.
  • Avoid water/oil splashes, direct sunlight, UV rays, radiation, poisonous gases, vibration, or mechanical shock in the operating environment.
D) Maintenance and Inspection
  • Periodically inspect installed capacitors for appearance (e.g., vent opening, electrolyte leakage) and electrical characteristics (capacitance, dissipation factor, leakage current).
E) In an Emergency
  • If smoke is observed due to safety vent operation, turn off the main switch or unplug the device.
  • If gas is inhaled or electrolyte ingested, rinse mouth/throat with water immediately.
  • If skin contacts electrolyte, wash with soap and water.
F) Storage
  • Store in a cool, dry indoor environment (Temperature: 5C-35C, Humidity: <75%).
  • Avoid storage in high temperature/humidity, or environments with water, brine, oil, ozone, UV radiation, or radiation.
G) Disposal
  • Incinerate after crushing or making a hole in the capacitor body.
  • If incineration is not possible, dispose of through a licensed waste disposal agent.
