Guidelines For Using Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
- Polarity: DC electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Ensure correct polarity to prevent circuit short-circuit or capacitor damage. Do not use DC electrolytic capacitors for AC applications.
- Bipolar Capacitors: Suitable for pulse and polarity-reversing circuits, not for pure AC or high ripple current circuits.
- Operating Voltage: Do not exceed rated voltage. Recommended working voltage is 70-80% of rated voltage for extended life.
- Ripple Current: Do not allow ripple current to exceed permissible limits to prevent overheating and damage. Generally not more than 80% of rated current.
- Fast Charge/Discharge Circuits: Use specially designed capacitors for circuits with frequent charge/discharge cycles.
- Operating Temperature: Capacitor characteristics vary with temperature. Lower temperatures ensure longer life. Life is generally doubled for every 10 reduction in temperature.
- Operating Frequency: Capacitance decreases and dissipation factor increases with higher frequencies.
- Long-Term Storage: For capacitors stored for a long time, gradually apply rated DC voltage before use to address increased leakage current and reduced withstand voltage.
- Case Insulation: The capacitor case is not insulated from the cathode terminal. Insulation measures are required at the mounting point if case insulation is necessary.
- Terminal Force: Do not apply excessive force to terminals or leads to prevent breakage or internal connection failure.
- Circuit Board Cleaning: Use recommended cleaning solvents (methanol, isopropanol, etc.). Avoid halogenated solvents.
- Soldering: Maintain distance from the insulated sleeve. Recommended solder bath temperature is within 260 for no more than 10 seconds.
- Hole Layout: Ensure printed circuit board hole spacing matches lead spacing to avoid stress on leads.
