Guidelines For Using Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor

To ensure optimal capacitor performance and longevity, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Polarity: DC electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Ensure correct polarity to prevent short circuits or damage. Use bipolar capacitors for uncertain polarity. Not suitable for AC applications.
  • Bipolar Capacitors: Suitable for pulse and polarity reverse circuits, but not for pure AC or high ripple current.
  • Operating Voltage: Do not exceed rated voltage. Recommended working voltage is 70-80% of rated voltage for extended life.
  • Ripple Current: Avoid excessive ripple current, which can cause overheating, capacitance reduction, and damage. Generally, do not exceed 80% of the rated current.
  • Fast Charge/Discharge: Use specially designed capacitors for circuits with frequent charge and discharge cycles to prevent damage and premature failure.
  • Operating Temperature: Capacitor characteristics vary with temperature. Lower temperatures generally ensure longer life.
  • Temperature and Life Relationship: Capacitor life is related to operating temperature. Reducing the temperature by 10 can double the life at rated temperature.
  • Operating Frequency: Capacitance decreases and dissipation factor (tg) increases with higher frequencies.
  • Long-Term Storage: For capacitors stored for extended periods, gradually apply rated DC voltage before use to address potential increases in leakage current and reduced voltage withstanding.
  • Case Insulation: The capacitor case is not insulated from the cathode terminal. Implement insulation measures at the mounting point if case insulation is required.
  • Terminal Force: Do not apply excessive force to terminals or leads to prevent breakage, separation, or internal connection damage.
  • Circuit Board Cleaning: Use recommended cleaning solvents (e.g., methanol, isopropanol) and avoid halogenated solvents to protect the capacitor's sleeve, marking, and sealing.
  • Soldering: Maintain a distance from the plastic sleeve. Recommended solder bath temperature is within 260 for no more than 10 seconds to avoid component damage.
  • Hole Layout on PCB: Ensure mounting hole spacing matches lead spacing to prevent stress on leads and potential circuit damage. Consider hole layout carefully to prevent solder splashing.
