Application Guidelines
For optimal performance and safety, it is crucial to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Circuit Design: Ensure operating conditions (temperature, ripple current) are within specified limits. Capacitors are polarized; avoid reverse voltage or AC voltage. For circuits with potential reversed polarity, use non-polar capacitors. Avoid rapid charge/discharge cycles unless using special design capacitors. Do not exceed rated voltage, paying attention to peak voltage. Series connections require balancing resistors. The outer sleeve is not an insulator; use standard sleeves only when insulation is not critical. Do not connect blank terminals of snap-in types. Avoid exposure to water, brine, oil, toxic gases, ozone, UV, radiation, severe vibration, or physical shock. Ensure proper PC board hole spacing matches lead spacing. Maintain adequate clearance above the safety vent. For screw terminal capacitors, avoid end seal side down mounting; horizontal mounting requires the positive terminal to be in the upper position. Keep circuit patterns clear of the capacitor's safety vent. Electrolyte and separator paper are combustible; avoid circuit patterns beneath the end seal and place heat-generating components away from capacitors.
- Mounting: Do not reuse assembled capacitors in different applications. Discharge capacitors before handling. Leakage current may increase after prolonged storage; perform voltage treatment if necessary. Confirm ratings and polarity before installation. Avoid dropping or deforming capacitors. Ensure lead spacing matches PC board hole spacing. Snap-in types should be installed tightly to the PC board. Be mindful of clinch force during automatic insertion and mechanical shock from handling equipment. Soldering conditions must be within specified limits for both Pb/Sn and Pb-free types. Do not tilt, lay down, or twist the capacitor body after soldering. Do not carry PC boards by grasping soldered capacitors. Prevent anything from touching the capacitor after soldering. Avoid cleaning with halogenated cleaning agents. When using fixing or coating materials, avoid halogenated ingredients and ensure flux/contamination is removed from the end seal area.
- Storage: Store capacitors at 5C to 35C, humidity less than 75% RH, and out of direct sunlight. Capacitors stored for over a year may require voltage aging treatment to reform the oxide dielectric.
- Disposal: Dispose of capacitors as industrial waste through professional waste disposal specialists.
- Printed Circuit Board Cleaning: Halogen-type organic solvents can permeate capacitors and cause corrosion. While water/alcohol-based cleaners are safer, capacitors resistant to halogen cleaning agents are desirable. Penetration can occur through clearances between the rubber seal and case/lead wires.
- Basic Electrical Characteristics: Capacitance is measured at 120Hz, 0.5Vrms AC with DC bias. Capacitance decreases with increasing frequency and decreasing temperature. Tan (dissipation factor) increases with frequency and decreases with temperature. ESR is influenced by the oxide layer and electrolyte/separator combination, increasing at lower temperatures and decreasing with frequency. Impedance is frequency-dependent, influenced by capacitive reactance, inductive reactance, and ESR. Leakage current is a small DC current that flows to reform the oxide layer, generally decreasing over time and increasing with temperature and voltage.
Part Number System
The part number system follows a structured format: Series, Capacitance Code, Tolerance Code, Voltage Code, Case Size Code, Feature Code, and Type Code (e.g., RR for Radial Bulk).
