Application Guidelines

Circuit Design:

  • Ensure operating environment and mounting conditions are within catalog specifications.
  • Operating temperature and ripple current must not exceed specified limits.
  • Select capacitors that meet the life requirements of the application.
  • Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized; avoid reverse or AC voltage. Use non-polar types for circuits with potential reversed polarity.
  • Avoid rapid and frequent charge/discharge cycles; use special design capacitors for such applications.
  • Do not apply excess voltage; ensure peak voltage (DC + ripple) does not exceed rated voltage.
  • For series connections, ensure voltage is applied equally across capacitors using balancing resistors.
  • Outer sleeve is not guaranteed as electrical insulator; use special insulated types if required.
  • Do not connect blank terminals of snap-in type capacitors to circuits to prevent short circuits.
  • Avoid exposure to water, brine, oil, toxic gases (HS, SO, NO, Cl, NH), ozone, UV, or radiation.
  • Avoid severe vibration and physical shock exceeding specifications.
  • Ensure PC board hole spacing matches lead spacing.
  • Keep circuit patterns away from the capacitor safety vent.
  • Provide adequate clearance above the safety vent: 2mm for 6.3~16, 3mm for 18~35, 5mm for 40+.
  • For end-seal vented parts, make a corresponding hole on the PC board for gas release.
  • Do not install screw terminal capacitors with end seal side down; for horizontal mounting, positive terminal must be upper.
  • Electrolyte and separator paper are combustible; electrolyte is conductive. Avoid circuit patterns beneath end seals.
  • Keep heat-generating components away from capacitors.
  • Consider temperature and frequency effects on electrical characteristics.
  • On double-sided PC boards, avoid placing capacitors over circuit patterns or unused holes.
  • Adhere to specified torque for terminal screws and bracket screws.
  • When paralleling capacitors, consider current balance.

Mounting:

  • Do not reuse assembled capacitors in different applications.
  • Discharge capacitors using a 1k resistor before handling.
  • Leakage current may increase after storage over 6 months; perform voltage treatment if necessary.
  • Confirm ratings and polarity before installation.
  • Do not drop or use dropped capacitors.
  • Avoid deforming capacitors during installation.
  • Ensure lead spacing matches PC board hole spacing.
  • Snap-in type capacitors (JIS 692, 693, 694, 695) should be installed tightly to the PC board.
  • Avoid excessive clinch force during automatic insertion.
  • Be careful of mechanical shock from automated equipment.
  • Soldering conditions must be within SAMXON specifications.
  • Do not tilt, lay down, or twist the capacitor body after soldering.
  • Do not carry PC boards by grasping soldered capacitors.
  • Prevent contact with capacitors after soldering; avoid radiated heat.
  • Do not clean capacitors with halogenated cleaning agents.
  • Avoid fixing or coating materials containing halogen. Remove flux and contamination from end seal gaps before coating.
  • Do not apply coating material all around the capacitor body; apply partially.

Storage:

  • Store capacitors at 5C to 35C, humidity less than 75% RH, out of direct sunlight.
  • Capacitors stored for over one year should undergo voltage aging before use.

Disposal:

  • Dispose of capacitors as industrial waste through professional waste disposal specialists.

Printed Circuit Board Cleaning:

  • Halogen type organic solvents can permeate capacitors and cause corrosion due to free chlorine ions.
  • Recommended cleaning agents: Water type, Alcohol type. Avoid Halogen type cleaning agents (Trichlorotrifluoroethane, Fluorotrichloromethane, Trichloroethane, Trichloroethylene, Methyl Chloride) as they are corrosive to aluminum.
  • Penetration channels include clearances between rubber and aluminum case/lead wires, and permeation through the rubber end seal. Tight sealing and solvent-resistant rubber are necessary.

Basic Electrical Characteristics:

  • Capacitance: Measured at 120Hz, 0.5Vrms AC with 1.5-2.0V DC bias. Decreases with increasing frequency and decreasing temperature.
  • Tan (Dissipation Factor): Ratio of resistive to capacitive reactance. Increases with measuring frequency and decreases with measuring temperature.
  • ESR: Composed of aluminum oxide layer and electrolyte/separator resistance. Increases with decreasing temperature. Decreases with increasing frequency.
  • Impedance (Z): Opposition to AC current. Predominantly capacitive reactance at low frequencies, ESR at mid-frequencies, and inductive reactance at high frequencies. Varies with temperature due to electrolyte resistivity.
  • Leakage Current: Small DC current flowing to reform the oxide layer. Decreases over time after voltage application. Increases with temperature and voltage. Measured at 20C with rated voltage through a 1,000 resistor.
