Stainless steel 15-5 is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel designed to have higher toughness than 17-4 PH stainless steel. 15-5PH Stainless Steel Bar is used in applications that require better corrosion resistance and transverse properties than other similar martensitic grades. Heat treatment is used to strengthen the 15-5PH alloy. Treated 15-5 stainless steel is available in eight standard conditions - H 900, H 925, H 1025, H 1075, H 1100, H 1150, H 1150+1150 and H 1150-M. Heat treatment of 15-5 PH follows these steps:
- Use austenite conditioning
- Air cooling to transform austenite to martensite
- Precipitation hardening until the desired condition is achieved
15-5PH Stainless Steel Bar can be further heat treated in the precipitation hardened condition to improve resistance to stress corrosion cracking for high temperature applications. Fabrication is recommended after the metal has been heat treated to minimize deformation and stress.
