The tubes are manufactured using a seamless process followed by cold drawing to achieve precise dimensions and improved mechanical properties.
Heat Treatment:
After the final cold-drawn pass, tubes are heat-treated at 1200°F (640°C) or higher to ensure adequate ductility for rolling into tube sheets and to meet specified mechanical property requirements.

ASTM A556 tubes are frequently supplied in U-bend configurations for feedwater heater applications. When U-bends are specified:
- Tubes shall be bent to the specified radius without visible flattening or wrinkling
- Stress relief annealing is required for U-bends, performed at 1100 – 1200°F (585 – 640°C)
- The bending process shall not reduce the wall thickness below the minimum requirement

- Allows for free thermal expansion of tubes
- Simplifies tube sheet design (only one tube sheet required)
