UNS S32750 304 316L Duplex Stainless Steel Sheet For Aggressive Environments
UNS S32750 is a super duplex stainless steel sheet that delivers outstanding corrosion resistance combined with high mechanical strength. This grade is specifically engineered for service in extremely aggressive environments, including high-chloride seawater, acid chloride media, and sour gas applications.
As a super duplex grade, UNS S32750 features a balanced microstructure of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite. This dual-phase structure provides approximately twice the yield strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels such as 304 or 316L, while maintaining good ductility and toughness.
ASTM A240 is the standard specification covering chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel sheets for pressure vessels and general applications. UNS S32750 sheets produced under this specification are solution annealed and water quenched to achieve the optimal phase balance and restore corrosion resistance.

| Element | Content (% by weight) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.030 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 1.00 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 1.00 max |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.030 max |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.010 max |
| Chromium (Cr) | 24.00 – 26.00 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 6.00 – 8.00 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 3.00 – 4.00 |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.20 – 0.30 |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.50 – 1.00 |
| Tungsten (W) | 0.50 – 1.00 |
Note: The addition of tungsten and copper distinguishes S32760 from other super duplex grades such as S32750, providing enhanced corrosion resistance in specific aggressive media.
After proper solution annealing and water quenching, the UNS S32760 plate delivers the following mechanical properties:
| Property | Required Value (Typical) |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 750 MPa (109 ksi) min |
| Yield Strength (0.2% offset) | 550 MPa (80 ksi) min |
| Elongation (2" or 50mm) | 25% min |
| Hardness (Brinell) | 310 HBW max |
| Hardness (Rockwell C) | 32 HRC max |
| Charpy Impact (Longitudinal) | 100 J min at -20°C |
| Charpy Impact (Transverse) | 45 J min at -20°C |
Key mechanical advantages:
-
Yield strength approximately 2x that of 304 and 316 stainless steels
-
Good impact toughness even at sub-zero temperatures
-
Ductility suitable for forming and fabrication
UNS S32760 super duplex plate is chosen for demanding applications where corrosion resistance and mechanical strength must work together.
-
Oil and gas platform topside equipment
-
Seawater cooling systems and firewater lines
-
Subsea manifolds and risers
-
Desalination plant vessels and piping
-
Ballast water treatment systems
The high PRE value (typically >40) ensures resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater, even in stagnant or low-flow conditions.
-
Heat exchangers handling chloride-containing cooling water
-
Reactor vessels for organic acids and chlorides
-
Evaporators and crystallizers
-
FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) system components
-
Pressure vessels for aggressive chemical service
S32760 resists stress corrosion cracking in chloride environments where 300-series austenitic stainless steels would fail.
-
Process vessels on offshore platforms
-
Separation and treatment equipment
-
High-pressure flowlines and manifolds
-
Sour service components (NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliant)
-
Bleaching plant digesters and washers
-
Chlorine dioxide bleaching towers
-
White liquor and green liquor tanks
The combination of high strength and corrosion resistance allows for lighter wall thicknesses compared to less corrosion-resistant alloys.
-
Condensers in coastal power plants
-
Cooling water intake systems
-
FGD absorber towers and ductwork
