High Temperature Seamless Stainless Steel 310 Pipe For Furnace Heat Treat Applications
SS 310 seamless pipe is a premium austenitic stainless steel product designed for extreme high-temperature service where weld seams cannot be tolerated. The seamless manufacturing process ensures uniform wall thickness, consistent mechanical properties, and a complete absence of a longitudinal weld seam, making it the preferred choice for high-pressure and high-temperature piping systems in demanding industrial environments.
The 310 grade contains high levels of chromium (24-26%) and nickel (19-22%), delivering exceptional oxidation resistance and good creep strength at temperatures up to 1150°C (2100°F) under continuous service. This combination of high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance makes SS 310 seamless pipe the material of choice for furnace components, heat treatment equipment, chemical processing, and power generation applications.
UNS S31000 is the standard designation for this grade, and ASTM A312 / ASME SA312 is the governing specification for seamless austenitic stainless steel pipe. The seamless construction is achieved through hot extrusion or cold drawing of solid round billets, eliminating any potential weak points associated with welded seams.
Unlike welded pipe, seamless pipe offers complete uniformity and is capable of withstanding higher pressures and more severe thermal cycling. For applications involving hydrogen service, high-pressure steam, or aggressive high-temperature atmospheres, SS 310 seamless pipe provides the reliability and safety margin that project engineers require.
Key advantages of SS 310 seamless pipe:
-
No longitudinal weld seam – uniform strength in all directions
-
Outstanding oxidation resistance up to 1150°C (2100°F)
-
High creep strength for sustained high-temperature loading
-
Resistance to carburization and sulfidation
-
Capable of withstanding higher pressures than welded alternatives
-
Suitable for hydrogen service and critical high-temperature applications

The seamless manufacturing process for SS 310 pipe involves several critical steps to ensure quality and consistency.
Step 1 – Billet Preparation
Solid round billets of UNS S31000 composition are cut to length, inspected, and heated to approximately 1200°C (2190°F) in a rotary hearth furnace.
Step 2 – Piercing
The heated billet is fed into a piercing mill where a mandrel is forced through the center, creating a hollow shell. This rotary piercing process initiates the seamless tube formation.
Step 3 – Elongation
The hollow shell passes through a series of elongation mills (such as a mandrel mill or continuous rolling mill) to reduce wall thickness and increase length to achieve the target dimensions.
Step 4 – Sizing and Reducing
The pipe passes through a sizing mill or reducing mill to achieve precise outer diameter and straightness.
Step 5 – Cold Drawing (Optional)
For tighter dimensional tolerances, improved surface finish, and enhanced mechanical properties, the hot-finished pipe may be cold drawn through a die and over a mandrel. Multiple cold drawing passes with intermediate annealing may be employed for smaller diameters and thin walls.
Step 6 – Solution Annealing
The pipe is heated to 1040-1120°C (1900-2050°F) and then rapidly water quenched to dissolve carbides and restore corrosion resistance.
Step 7 – Straightening and Finishing
The annealed pipe is straightened, cut to length, ends are prepared (plain, beveled, or threaded), and surface finish is applied.
