Low Nickel Stainless Steel Seamless Tube For Structural Decorative Corrosive Environments
Low-nickel stainless steel seamless tube is an economical alternative to traditional austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316. By reducing nickel content and increasing manganese and nitrogen, this grade achieves a balanced austenitic structure at a significantly lower material cost, making it an attractive choice for general industrial applications where extreme corrosion resistance is not the primary requirement.
The most common low-nickel austenitic grade is 201 stainless steel (UNS S20100), which typically contains 3.5-5.5% nickel compared to 8-10.5% in 304. The reduced nickel content is compensated by higher manganese (5.5-7.5%) and nitrogen (0.25% max), which stabilize the austenitic phase and provide mechanical properties comparable to or better than standard 304 in many aspects.
The seamless manufacturing process ensures uniform wall thickness, consistent mechanical properties, and complete absence of a longitudinal weld seam. This seamless construction provides superior pressure-holding capability and reliability compared to welded tubes, making low-nickel seamless tubes suitable for a wide range of industrial, structural, and decorative applications.

Low-nickel grade offers approximately 35% higher yield strength than 304, which can allow for thinner wall sections in structural applications.
The seamless manufacturing process for low-nickel stainless steel tubes involves cold drawing or cold rolling from hollow billets.
Step 1 – Hollow Billet Preparation
Solid round billets of low-nickel composition are pierced to create a hollow shell.
Step 2 – Cold Drawing
The hollow shell is drawn through a die and over a mandrel at room temperature. Multiple passes with intermediate annealing are used to achieve precise dimensions.
Step 3 – Solution Annealing
The tube is heated to 1010-1120°C (1850-2050°F) and then rapidly cooled to restore corrosion resistance and ductility.
Step 4 – Pickling or Bright Annealing
Scale is removed through acid pickling, or the tube is bright annealed in a controlled atmosphere for a clean, oxide-free surface.
Step 5 – Straightening and Finishing
The tube is straightened, cut to length, and the surface finish is applied as required.
| Finish | Description | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| Annealed & Pickled (AP) | Scale removed by acid, matte gray appearance | General industrial use |
| Bright Annealed (BA) | Oxide-free, bright reflective surface | Clean applications, food contact |
| Polished (180-400#) | Mechanically polished to the specified grit | Decorative, architectural |
| Drawn (as-drawn) | No post-anneal treatment | Further fabrication required |
