TP316L SMLS Pipe Low Carbon Molybdenum Bearing Seamless Pipe
TP316L SMLS pipe is a low carbon, molybdenum-bearing austenitic seamless stainless steel pipe designed for superior corrosion resistance in aggressive environments. The "TP" designation indicates that the pipe meets the requirements of ASTM A312, the standard specification for seamless, welded, and heavily cold worked austenitic stainless steel pipes. "SMLS" denotes seamless construction, meaning no longitudinal weld seam exists.
The low carbon content (0.030% maximum) distinguishes TP316L from standard TP316. This reduced carbon level prevents sensitization – the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries during welding or elevated temperature service. Sensitization can lead to intergranular corrosion, so TP316L is the preferred choice for welded assemblies and applications involving exposure to corrosive media in the as-welded condition.
The addition of 2-3% molybdenum provides significantly enhanced resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in chloride-containing environments, as well as improved resistance to reducing acids such as sulfuric and phosphoric acid. This combination of properties makes TP316L one of the most versatile and widely specified stainless steel pipe grades for chemical processing, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, marine, and power generation industries.
The seamless manufacturing process ensures uniform wall thickness, consistent mechanical properties, and complete absence of weld seam vulnerabilities. This seamless construction provides superior pressure-holding capability and reliability, particularly important for high-pressure and critical service applications.

TP316L maintains excellent toughness down to cryogenic temperatures.
The seamless manufacturing process for TP316L pipe ensures consistent quality and dimensional accuracy.
Step 1 – Billet Preparation
Solid round billets of TP316L composition are inspected, cut to length, and heated to approximately 1200°C (2190°F) in a rotary hearth furnace.
Step 2 – Rotary Piercing
The heated billet is fed into a piercing mill where a conical mandrel forces through the center, creating a hollow shell.
Step 3 – Elongation (Mandrel Mill)
The hollow shell passes through a mandrel mill with multiple rolling stands to reduce wall thickness and increase length.
Step 4 – Sizing and Reducing
The pipe passes through a sizing mill or reducing mill to achieve precise outer diameter and straightness.
Step 5 – Hot Finishing or Cold Drawing
-
Hot Finished: The pipe is solution annealed directly after hot rolling.
-
Cold Drawn (for tighter tolerances): The hot finished pipe is pickled, then cold drawn through a die and over a mandrel. Multiple cold drawing passes with intermediate annealing are employed for small diameters and thin walls.
Step 6 – Solution Annealing
The pipe is heated to 1010-1120°C (1850-2050°F) and then water quenched. This step dissolves chromium carbides, restores corrosion resistance, and achieves the required mechanical properties.
Step 7 – Pickling or Bright Annealing
-
Pickling (AP): The pipe is immersed in an acid bath (nitric-hydrofluoric acid) to remove mill scale and heat tint.
-
Bright Annealing (BA): The final annealing is performed in a controlled hydrogen or nitrogen atmosphere, producing an oxide-free, bright surface.
Step 8 – Straightening and Finishing
The pipe is straightened using rotary straighteners, cut to specified lengths, and ends are prepared (plain, beveled, or threaded).
Step 9 – Final Inspection
Dimensional checks, surface inspection, and non-destructive testing are performed before packaging.

TP316L offers significantly enhanced corrosion resistance compared to TP304/L due to its molybdenum content.
| Corrosion Type | TP304/L | TP316L |
|---|---|---|
| Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN) | 18-20 | 24-28 |
| Crevice Corrosion | Low | Good |
| Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking | Susceptible (>60°C) | Resistant (to higher limits) |
| Sulfuric Acid (dilute) | Poor | Moderate-Good |
| Phosphoric Acid | Moderate | Good-Excellent |
| Acetic Acid | Good | Excellent |
| Citric Acid | Good | Excellent |
| Lactic Acid | Good | Excellent |
| Marine Atmosphere | Moderate | Excellent |
| Seawater (intermittent) | Limited | Good |
PREN Calculation: PREN = Cr% + 3.3(Mo%) + 16N%
For TP316L (Cr 17%, Mo 2.5%): PREN = 17 + 8.25 = 25.25
