Seawater desalination demands materials that can withstand some of the most aggressive chloride-rich environments on earth. ASTM A312 904L welded pipe in EN 1.4539 grade is purpose-engineered for long-term reliability in SWRO plants, multi-stage flash (MSF) evaporators, and brine concentration systems. Its high molybdenum and copper alloying provides a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) exceeding 34, placing it well above standard 316L and 317L grades for marine service.

Why 904L Outperforms in Desalination Service

Desalination piping systems are continuously exposed to high-chloride seawater at elevated temperatures and flow velocities. Under these conditions, conventional stainless steels suffer from pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion beneath gaskets and deposits, and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). The 904L grade addresses all three failure modes through its balanced alloy composition: high chromium forms a robust passive film, molybdenum prevents chloride penetration into pits, nickel ensures uniform austenitic structure, and copper provides an additional barrier against reducing conditions that develop within crevices and beneath biofilms.

Manufacturing & Weld Integrity

Our 904L welded pipes are fabricated from prime cold-rolled or hot-rolled plate stock using a multi-pass welding sequence: TIG plasma root pass for full penetration with controlled heat input, followed by submerged arc welding (SAW) for the fill and cap passes. Every weld seam undergoes 100% radiographic testing (RT) per ASME Section V, dye penetrant testing (DPT) per ASTM E165, and post-weld solution annealing at 1070-1150°C with rapid quenching to restore full corrosion resistance across the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
