ASTM A240 904L (UNS N08904) hot rolled stainless steel plate is a high-alloy super austenitic grade with exceptional corrosion resistance in aggressive acidic environments, particularly sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids. With high nickel (23-28%), chromium (19-23%), molybdenum (4-5%), and copper (1.0-2.0%) content, 904L significantly outperforms standard 316L in reducing acid environments and offers superior resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion.
Originally developed for sulfuric acid service, 904L has become the material of choice for chemical processing equipment, pollution control systems, and seawater handling where conventional stainless steels fail. The hot rolled No.1 finish delivers industrial-grade surface quality for heavy fabrication applications.
