A 4 - way switch has four terminals and two sets of toggle positions. When the switch is flipped up, current can flow through two of the terminals. When it is flipped down, current flows through the other two terminals. It is used in combination with two 3 - way switches, with the 4 - way switch in the middle. The 3 - way switches are placed at either end of the circuit. The traveler wires run between the 3 - way and 4 - way switches. By changing the positions of the 3 - way and 4 - way switches, the circuit can be opened or closed to control the on - off state of the light.

Structure and Appearance

A 4 - way switch usually has two brass - colored terminal screws and two black or other darker - colored ones, along with a green ground terminal. The two types of basic 4 - way switches are toggle and decora. Toggle switches have a lever that flips up or down, while decora switches have a more modern, flat - panel design.
