Product Description
Product Overview

The D15 HDPE ePTFE vent membrane is a specialized pressure management component designed to be integrated into caps and closures of small chemical drums, IBC totes, and industrial containers. It utilizes a 15mm HDPE body and a chemically resistant ePTFE membrane to provide continuous, safe ventilation for containers holding corrosive, volatile, or gas-generating chemicals. Unlike large bung-mounted vents, this compact design is perfect for secondary closure venting, sampling ports, or smaller dispense caps where space is limited. It ensures that chemical drums and totes can breathe during filling, dispensing, and transport, preventing dangerous overpressure, vacuum collapse, and hazardous liquid egress, while meeting stringent industrial safety and UN packaging regulations.

Cause

Chemical drums and IBC totes face severe pressure differentials during their lifecycle. During hot filling, the trapped air expands; during discharge, a vacuum is created that can collapse the container. Many industrial chemicals, such as hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, or acids, slowly decompose and generate oxygen, hydrogen, or other gases. Without proper ventilation, pressure buildup can lead to catastrophic drum rupture, lid blow-off, or violent splashing when opening. Simple sintered vents or mechanical valves often corrode, clog, or fail to prevent liquid leakage when containers are tipped. Incompatible vent materials also risk chemical attack, compromising the seal.

Solution

The D15 HDPE ePTFE vent membrane provides a passive, maintenance-free solution. It is thermally welded into an HDPE cap component, forming a single, homogenous piece that resists chemical attack. The ePTFE membrane allows millions of gas molecules to exit per second while maintaining a physical barrier against liquids, dust, and bacteria. Its high water entry pressure ensures that even if a drum is laid on its side, no hazardous liquid seeps through. This protects operators, reduces spill clean-up costs, and maintains the drum’s structural integrity, making it ideal for closed-loop dispensing systems and long-term storage.

How It Works

The vent is integrated into the drum’s closure system. As the internal gas pressure rises due to decomposition or temperature increase, gas molecules flow through the ePTFE membrane’s nanopores, equalizing pressure with the atmosphere. When liquid is dispensed and a vacuum starts to form, ambient air is pulled back through the membrane to prevent the drum from collapsing. The membrane’s oleophobic coating resists wetting by low-surface-tension industrial chemicals, ensuring consistent performance even when splashed or submerged.

How To Choose
  1. Verify your drum cap material: this vent is for HDPE caps. For PP caps, request a PP variant.
  2. Assess gas generation rate: for high-decomposition chemicals like concentrated peroxide, select a vent with high airflow capacity within the D15 range.
  3. Determine the installation location: ensure the vent is placed where liquid pooling is minimized, or specify an inner splash guard.
  4. Confirm regulatory requirements: we provide test data for UN 3H1 and related packaging standards.
FAQ
  • Q: Can this vent handle strong oxidizing acids like nitric acid?

A: ePTFE is inert to virtually all chemicals except molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine. However, always test with your specific concentration and temperature to confirm long-term performance.

  • Q: How do I clean the vent if it becomes coated with chemical residue?

A: The outer surface can be gently rinsed with a compatible solvent. The membrane will resist liquid ingress during cleaning.

  • Q: Will gas bubbles be visible when the drum is under pressure and submerged?

A: Yes, this is normal and indicates the vent is functioning to release excess pressure safely.

  • Q: Can this be used in vented dispensing systems where liquid is pumped out continuously?

A: Absolutely. It provides the necessary air intake to replace dispensed volume without opening a secondary vent, maintaining a closed system.

  • Q: What is the maximum drum size this single vent can support?

A: One D15 vent is typically sufficient for drums up to 60L. For larger drums or high-flow dispensing, consider a larger vent or multiple units.
