Product Description
Product Overview

The adhesive breathable vent for dental implant and bone graft sterile packaging is a precision sterile barrier component engineered for the small, high-value, sterility-critical devices used in modern dentistry and oral-maxillofacial surgery. This vent integrates a medical-grade, hydrophobic ePTFE membrane with a validated, low-extractable adhesive carrier, designed for direct application to the thermoformed blister trays, peel-pouch lids, and glass vials used to package dental implants, abutments, bone graft granules, collagen membranes, and periodontal regeneration materials. It provides a sterile gas-exchange pathway for EtO, steam, or hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilization, while maintaining an absolute bacterial barrier during the post-sterilization shelf life. The vent's compact size and adhesive format simplify packaging design and assembly, making it ideal for the space-constrained, high-value dental implant market.

Cause

A dental implant is a precision-machined titanium or zirconia device surgically placed into the patient's jawbone. It must be delivered sterile to the surgical site. The sterile barrier system—typically a thermoformed PETG or polystyrene tray with a Tyvek lid—must allow the sterilant gas to reach the implant's intricate surface features, including the threaded body and the internal prosthetic connection. Incomplete sterilant penetration can leave viable microorganisms on the implant, leading to peri-implantitis and implant failure. After sterilization, the package must maintain sterility for the labeled shelf life, often 5 years. Any breach in the sterile barrier is catastrophic. The vent must be small enough to fit on the tray lid without interfering with the package's stacking and labeling, and the adhesive must bond permanently to the Tyvek or plastic substrate.

Solution

The adhesive breathable vent is applied to a pre-cut port on the Tyvek lid or blister tray. The 0.2-micron ePTFE membrane provides a high-gas-flow pathway for sterilant ingress and egress during the sterilization cycle. After the cycle, it forms a permanent sterile barrier. The hydrophobic property ensures that no moisture or liquid contaminant can enter the package during storage. The adhesive backing bonds securely to Tyvek, PETG, polystyrene, and other common dental packaging materials. The vent is supplied on a roll in a die-cut format suitable for automated pick-and-place application on the packaging line. Its low profile and small footprint fit the compact geometry of dental implant packaging.

How It Works

The vent is applied to the packaging during the form-fill-seal process. The implant or biomaterial is placed in the tray, the Tyvek lid is sealed, and the vent is applied over a die-cut port in the lid or tray. The sealed package undergoes sterilization. The sterilant gas penetrates the package through the vent membrane, contacting all surfaces of the device. After the cycle, the membrane's 0.2-micron pores form a sterile barrier. The package is stored in the dental practice until the day of surgery, when it is opened in the sterile field.

How To Choose
  1. Identify the sterilization method used for the implant or biomaterial to confirm vent compatibility.

  2. Determine the packaging material and select an adhesive that bonds reliably to that substrate (Tyvek, PETG, etc.).

  3. Size the vent airflow based on the package internal volume and the sterilizer cycle vacuum ramp rates.

  4. Validate the complete sterile barrier system per ISO 11607: bacterial challenge, seal integrity, and accelerated/real-time aging.

  5. Test the vent's adhesive bond after sterilization and during the aging study to ensure no delamination.

FAQ
  • Q: Will the small vent provide enough airflow for complete sterilant penetration into the implant's internal threads?
A: The vent's airflow is sized based on the total package volume and the sterilizer cycle parameters. For packages with complex internal geometries, we recommend penetration studies with biological indicators to confirm sterilization efficacy.

  • Q: Is the adhesive compatible with the Tyvek lid material?
A: Yes, we provide adhesive formulations specifically optimized for bonding to Tyvek and other porous medical packaging materials.

  • Q: Does the vent affect the peel-open characteristics of the Tyvek lid?
A: The vent is positioned on a dedicated port area separate from the peelable seal zone. It does not interfere with the peel opening of the package.

  • Q: Can the vent be color-matched to the package branding?
A: The ePTFE membrane is naturally white. The vent carrier can be provided in custom colors to match the package design.

  • Q: How is the vent validated for a 5-year shelf life?
A: We conduct accelerated aging per ASTM F1980 at elevated temperatures to simulate 5 years of real-time aging, followed by bacterial challenge testing to confirm sterile barrier maintenance.
