This survey method determines underground geological conditions and can be categorized as:
- Geophysical exploration: Identifies lithology, groundwater level, karst cave distribution, etc., based on conductivity, magnetism, density, and elastic wave propagation speed through different underground strata and media
- Drilling: Combined with pit (groove) exploration
- Penetration: Serves as both an exploration method and an in-situ test method
- Divide the field into homogeneous units based on visual observation and farmer experience
- Remove surface litter at the sampling spot
- Drive the auger to a plough depth of 15 cm and draw the soil sample
- Collect 10-15 samples from each sampling unit and place in a bucket or tray
- If auger is unavailable, make a 'V' shaped cut to 15 cm depth using a spade
- Remove thick soil slices from top to bottom of the exposed 'V' cut face and place in a clean container
