RO Membrane Working Principle

2, A container is divided into two halves by a semi-permeable membrane through which only water molecules pass through and no salt molecules are allowed to pass through. Pure water and brine are injected on both sides of the membrane to make the heights on both sides as high.

3, After a while, the liquid level of the brine rises and the level of the pure water drops. This is because the water molecules on the pure water side are transferred to the side of the brine through the semipermeable membrane.

4, When the permeation reaches equilibrium, the water column on the brine side is higher than the water column on the pure water side. This phenomenon is caused by the so-called "osmotic pressure", which depends on the concentration of the brine.
