Stainless steels are engineering materials with good corrosion resistance, strength,

and fabrication characteristics. 

Stainless steel shims (also called corrosion resistant steel shims or SS shims) will not stain,

corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel.

Common shims made from stainless steel include shim plates, alignment shims, bearing shims

and shim spacers/washers.

Common Stainless Steel Grades for Shim Applications

• Type 17-7: Used for high-strength and moderate corrosion resistance
• Type 301: Used for high strength, ductility, and high corrosion resistance
• Type 302: High strength, low weight, easy to clean and fabricate
• Type 304, 304L: Resistant to food process elements, resists chemicals, dyes, and rusting
• Type 305: Attractive, easy fabrication, clean, good for low work hardening and when you need a high strength-to-weight ratio
• Type 316, 316L: Better resistance to corrosion than 304, pitting resistance, creep strength
• Type 321: Withstands high temperatures, resists corrosion, high strength
• Type 410: High heat and corrosion resistance, strong
• Type 430: Used for polished trim objects in mild environments
