SpO2 is an important part of monitoring a patient's health status, and is usually achieved by attaching a sensor to a part of the patient's body. The Spo2 sensor is usually connected to a pulse oximeter sensor placed on the patient's finger or earlobe to measure the amount of oxygen bound to the hemoglobin molecule. The pulse oximeter works by applying the sensor to an area of tissue rich in capillaries and arterioles, such as a finger or toe. The sensor contains a dual light source and a photodetector. Bones, tissues, pigmentation, and venous blood vessels usually absorb a constant amount of light over time, and the vascular bed usually pulsates and absorbs different amounts of light during the pulsation. The ratio of light absorbed is then converted into a measurement of functional oxygen saturation (SpO2).
