The three-way catalytic converter is the most critical external purification component in automotive exhaust systems, designed to convert harmful emissions into harmless substances through advanced oxidation and reduction reactions.
Pollution Reduction Process
When high-temperature exhaust gas flows through the converter, the platinum-palladium catalyst enhances chemical reactions that transform:
- Carbon monoxide (CO) into non-toxic carbon dioxide (CO₂)
- Hydrocarbons (HC) into water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen (N₂) and oxygen (O₂)
