Base Information
SOD is an enzyme that alternately catalyzes the disproportionation (or partition) of superoxide (O2-) radicals into ordinary molecular oxygen (O2) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Superoxide is a by-product of oxygen metabolism. If it is not regulated, it can cause many types of cell damage. Hydrogen peroxide is also destructive, but less destructive, and will be degraded by other enzymes (such as catalase). Therefore, in almost all living cells exposed to oxygen, SOD is an important antioxidant defense. One exception is Lactobacillus plantarum and related Lactobacillus, which use different mechanisms to prevent damage caused by reactivity (O2).
