What does the camshaft do?
The camshaft is a rotating shaft (or shafts) in an engine that activates the intake and exhaust valves for each cylinder. As the shaft turns, cams along its length press down on the spring-loaded valves in synchronicity with the motion of the pistons and firing of the spark plugs.
What causes camshaft to seize?
The most common defects are broken and seized camshafts. The shaft breakage is caused by incorrect assembly into a misalignment position, which limits the free rotation of the cam. Seizing of camshafts is caused by impurities in the shaft bearing housing, respectively by malfunction of the engine lubriion system.
