Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3, LN) crystal is a negative uniaxial crystal and one of the most comprehensively characterized optical materials. LN crystal offers wide transparency in visible and mid-infrared light with excellent chemical and mechanical stability, making it ideal for infrared birefringent applications.
LN crystal features high electro-optic coefficient, broad optical transparency window, and superior optical quality. It is the preferred material for optical modulation and Q-switch applications in near-infrared and infrared bands. For electro-optic modulators, Z-cut orientation provides zero residual birefringence along light propagation, while X-cut offers non-zero residual birefringence with maximum effective electro-optic coefficient.
