Introduction:

 

Magnesium anodes protect steel through sacrificial electrochemistry. Magnesium is negatively charged relative to steel. When the magnesium rod is connected to the steel tank by electrical conductors, the steel tank is then filled with water, and an electric current will continuously flow through the water between the magnesium rod and any exposed steel areas on the wall. The circuit is completed through the water tank back to the magnesium rod. This protective current is created by the release of ions from magnesium, which can cause corrosion in the anode area. This type of galvanic protection is called "sacrificial"; magnesium rods (anode) corrode instead of cans (cathode). This principle of electrolytic corrosion control is called "cathodic protection". The tank is protected because the cathode surface does not rust.
