Introduction:
Due to the high chemical activity of magnesium alloys, strong self-corrosion, and no dense protective film on the surface, the current efficiency of magnesium anodes is much lower than that of aluminum and zinc anodes, usually around 50%. The outstanding advantages of magnesium anode materials are low density, large theoretical capacitance, negative potential, low polarizability, and high driving voltage (>0.6 V) to steel. Typical pure magnesium anodes (purity greater than 99.95%) have been phased out due to their low current efficiency (only around 30%). The addition of impurity elements will greatly reduce the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. Among them, Fe, Ni, Cu, and other elements reduce the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys particularly seriously. Therefore, reducing impurity elements is the preferred method to improve its performance. However, the smelting of high-purity magnesium is difficult, so alloying methods are often used in engineering to prepare high-performance magnesium anode materials.

When using magnesium alloy sacrificial anode, care should be taken to avoid collision with steel structure. American standard ASTM8431993 (2003) and Chinese standard GB/T177312004 both require the current efficiency of high-potential magnesium alloy sacrificial anodes to be higher than 50% and the potential higher than 1.77 V.
