During train operation and braking, these brake shoes directly contact wheel surfaces to create the friction necessary for stopping. The tile-shaped brake blocks, made from cast iron, composite materials, or other specialized compounds, grip wheel treads securely to halt rotation through controlled friction.

Locomotive composite brake shoes are categorized into two primary types:
