Niobium is alloyed with Zirconium 705 sheet to boost its strength and formability. Because of its strong affinity for oxygen, zirconium is a reactive metal that, in room temperature air, forms a protective oxide layer. The greater corrosion resistance of zirconium alloys is attributed to this protective oxide.

It is possible to improve this oxide layer by heat treating it. In high velocity systems, a well-formed improved oxide layer provides exceptional erosion resistance, improves corrosion resistance in some harsh conditions, and functions as a good bearing surface against a range of materials.

Even at cryogenic temperatures, zirconium alloys demonstrate good ductility, and their strength is on par with that of other typical technical alloys.
