Dioctyl phthalate is a colorless or light yellow transparent liquid with a special odor, a boiling point of 386°C, and a relative density of 0.980-0.983 (20/4°C). It is insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ethe. It is prepared by the esterification reaction of phthalic anhydride and 2-ethylhexanol.

This product is compatible with polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl butyral, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose nitrate, ethyl cellulose, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene and other resins, but incompatible with cellulose acetate and polyvinyl acetate. The plasticizing efficiency of this product is the same as that of DOP, but its cold resistance, weather resistance, volatility resistance and stability of plastic paste viscosity are better than DOP, and its electrical insulation is slightly worse than DOP. Due to its high price, it is not widely used. This product is a non-toxic plasticizer and can be used to make food packaging materials. This product is also used as a solvent and gas chromatography stationary liquid.
