Benzoic Acid CAS 65-85-0 FEMA 2131 Preservative White Powder
Benzoic acid is commonly used as a pharmaceutical or preservative, exhibiting antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-mold properties. In medical applications, it is typically applied topically to treat dermatophytic skin infections. It is also utilized in the production of synthetic fibers, resins, coatings, rubber, and tobacco products. Originally, benzoic acid was obtained through the dry distillation of benzoin resin or its hydrolysis with alkaline water; it can also be synthesized by the hydrolysis of hippuric acid. Industrially, benzoic acid is produced by oxidizing toluene with air in the presence of catalysts such as cobalt or manganese; or by hydrolyzing phthalic anhydride to remove the carboxyl group. Benzoic acid and its sodium salt serve as antimicrobial agents in latex, toothpaste, jams, and other foods, and also function as mordants for dyeing and printing.
