L-arabinose, also known as arabinose or pectinose, is a pentose sugar. In nature, L-arabinose rarely occurs as a monosaccharide; it is usually bound to other monosaccharides and found in the form of heteropolysaccharides in gums, hemicellulose, pectin, bacterial polysaccharides and certain glycosides. It exhibits high stability to heat and acid. As a low-calorie sweetener, L-arabinose has been approved by the US Food and Administration and the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for use as a health food additive.
Applications of L-arabinose: (1) Food and health supplements: diabetic foods, weight-loss foods, functional health foods, and sucrose additives; (2)as an additive in prescription and over-the-counter medicines for weight loss and blood glucose control, or as an excipient in finished pharmaceutical products; (3) An ideal intermediate for the synthesis of flavourings and fragrances; (4) As an intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis; (5) Organic synthesis and chemical reagents.
