Vanillic acid, with the molecular formula C8H8O4 and a molecular weight of 168.14, is a white needle-like crystal that is odorless, sublimable, and non-decomposable. It has a melting point of 210°C, is easily soluble in ethanol,  and slightly soluble in water. It does not show coloration when reacting with ferric chloride. Vanillic acid is one of the active components of Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora. The structure of picrolide contains vanillic acid groups, ferulic acid groups, and cinnamoyl groups, which hydrolyze into vanillic acid, ferulic acid, and cinnamic acid. Vanillic acid serves as an antibacterial component of Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora, and measuring its vanillic acid content can serve as an indicator for assessing the quality of Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora.

Vanillic acid is the raw material for the preparation of the hexazolol, which has antibacterial and fungal effects, is used in organic synthesis and the manufacture of flavors, and can also be used as a precursor for the synthesis of a variety of bio-based epoxies and polyesters.
