4-Dimethylaminopyridine, commonly abbreviated as DMAP, is an exceptionally strong nucleophilic acylating agent. The electron-donating dimethylamino group in its structure resonates with the parent ring (pyridine ring), strongly activating the nitrogen atom for nucleophilic substitution. It significantly catalyzes the acylation/esterification of highly sterically hindered, low-reactivity alcohols and amines/acids, with an activity approximately 104~106 times that of pyridine.
