Taurine, also known as β-aminoethanesulphonic acid, was first isolated from ox bile, hence its name. It appears as colourless or white monoclinic crystals, is odourless, chemically stable and soluble in organic solvents such as diethyl ethe. It is a sulphur-containing non-protein amino acid that exists in a free state within the body and does not participate in the biosynthesis of proteins. Although taurine does not participate in protein synthesis, it is closely associated with the metabolism of cysteine and cystine.
It is widely used in the pharmaceutical and food industries, as well as in the detergent industry and in the production of fluorescent whitening agents. It is also used in other organic syntheses and as a biochemical reagent.
