2-Undecanone, also known as methyl nonanone, is a colourless to pale yellow liquid with a citrus-like and rutacearic aroma; it occurs naturally in houttuynia, bananas, strawberries, cloves, ginger and plants of the Rutaceae family. Its FEMA number is 3093, its FDA number is 172.515, and its CoE number is 150.
It is used in the formulation of food flavourings; it can also serve as an intermediate in the production of flavourings and is used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce houttuynin; furthermore, as 2-undecanone has a strong odour, research conducted at North Carolina State University has shown that it can also be used as a mosquito repellent.
