- Chemical Composition: CuNi44 is a copper-nickel alloy with approximately 44% nickel and the remainder being copper, with small amounts of manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe)
- Thermoelectric EMF: The thermoelectric emf of CuNi44 is high compared to copper, making it useful in thermocouple applications
- Corrosion Resistance: CuNi44 is resistant to scaling and corrosion up to 600°C in oxygen-containing and oxidizing sulphurous gases and carburisation, among others
- Mechanical Properties: CuNi44 exhibits good mechanical properties at room temperature, with tensile strength ranging from 420 to 71 ksi and elongation from 18% to 25% depending on the material dimensions
- Oxidation Resistance: The material is resistant to oxidation, which is beneficial for applications involving high temperatures
- Solderability: CuNi44 has good solderability, which is an advantage in electrical and electronic applications
Applications:
- Precision Measurement Testers:
CuNi44 is particularly useful in precision measurement testers due to its very low temperature coefficient, which makes it ideal for applications where temperature stability is crucial.
- Thermocouples:
The alloy is used in the manufacturing of thermocouples because it develops a high electromotive force (EMF) when paired with other metals, such as copper, iron, and Ni-Cr, to form Type T, Type J, and Type E thermocouples, respectively.
- Electrical Resistance Applications:
CuNi44 is employed in wire-wound precision resistors that can operate up to 400°C (750°F) due to its high electrical resistivity and very low temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR).
- Heating Elements:
The alloy is used in heating wires and cables, as well as in heating mats, where protection from corrosion damage is necessary.
- Electrical Measuring Instruments:
CuNi44 is utilized in electrical measuring instruments and low-temperature heating elements with application temperatures up to 600°C.
- Industrial Rheostats:
The alloy finds use in industrial rheostats and electric motor starter resistances, volume control devices, and other similar applications where precise control of electrical current is required.
- Electrical Contacts:
CuNi44 is used in electrical contacts due to its good solderability and resistance to oxidation.
- Aerospace and Automotive Industries:
The alloy is also used in measuring instruments, aircraft, and automobile construction where its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties are advantageous.
These applications highlight the versatility of CuNi44 in various industries, particularly those that require materials with specific electrical properties and resistance to corrosive environments.
