Product Description

INCOLOY A-286/S66286/1.4980 Bar / Rod / Wire / Forging / Plate / Strip Reliable Choice For Fabricated And Welded Components In Nuclear Reactors

Incoloy A-286 (UNS S66286 / W.Nr. 1.4980) is an iron-nickel-chromium-based superalloy known for high strength, excellent oxidation resistance, and good fabricability at elevated temperatures up to 700°C (1290°F). It offers superior creep and rupture resistance, and can be age-hardened for increased strength. This alloy resists corrosion in mildly corrosive environments and maintains mechanical properties under stress. It is commonly used in aerospace, gas turbines, automotive exhaust systems, and fasteners. Typical product forms — bar, rod, wire, forging, plate, and strip — are chosen for components requiring long-term thermal stability, such as turbine disks, blades, and high-temperature springs. Incoloy A-286 is also readily weldable and formable, making it a versatile choice for high-temperature engineering.

Overview of Incoloy A-286

Incoloy A-286 is an iron-nickel-chromium-based superalloy designed for high strength and excellent corrosion resistance at temperatures up to 700°C (1290°F). It is a precipitation-hardenable alloy, commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and power generation industries.

Key Features (All Forms)

High-Temperature Strength & Creep Resistance

  • Excellent mechanical strength, including creep and stress rupture resistance up to ~700°C.
  • Maintains integrity under prolonged thermal exposure.

Good Corrosion & Oxidation Resistance

  • Resists oxidation in high-temperature environments.
  • Good general corrosion resistance in aqueous and mildly corrosive environments.
  • Suitable for mild acids, salts, and chloride stress corrosion.

Precipitation-Hardenable

  • Strength is achieved through precipitation hardening (age-hardening).
  • Typically used in the solution-annealed and aged condition for maximum strength.

Good Fabricability and Weldability

  • Easily formed, machined, and welded.
  • Good structural stability even after welding (post-weld heat treatment often applied).

Magnetic

  • Unlike many other superalloys (like Inconel), A-286 is magnetic, especially after aging.

Form-Specific Uses

Bar / Rod

  • Commonly used for aircraft engine fasteners, bolting, turbine shafts, and landing gear parts.
  • High mechanical strength with fatigue resistance.

Wire

  • Ideal for springs, lock wire, fasteners, and retaining rings in high-temperature assemblies.
  • Excellent ductility and high yield strength.

Forging

  • Used for aerospace and gas turbine components, rings, valve parts, and structural elements requiring creep resistance.

Plate / Strip

  • Applied in jet engine parts, heat exchangers, afterburners, and high-pressure vessels.
  • Good surface finish and mechanical stability.

Common Applications & Industries

  • Aerospace: Jet engines, turbine wheels, exhaust manifolds, fasteners
  • Automotive: High-performance exhaust valves, turbocharger components
  • Gas turbines & power generation: Blades, seals, high-temp housings
  • Cryogenic applications: Pressure vessels, low-temperature structural parts
  • Nuclear & marine: Bolts, springs, connectors requiring thermal + corrosion resistance
