- Riveted or pinned composite discs clamp the aluminum hat to the iron ring with steel rivets or radial pins. Torque is transmitted through the fasteners; thermal float is limited but present. This is the classic OE arrangement seen on BMW M performance platforms.
- Co-cast (dual cast) discs position a pre-cast, machined iron ring in a sand mold and cast the aluminum hat around it, forming a metallurgical joint at the toothed interface. The result behaves as one rigid component at room temperature yet decouples thermal growth because the two metals expand at different rates and the interlocked teeth tolerate differential movement.
